Si racconta che un giorno un cliente si presentò da Manet e gli chiese di realizzarli un dipinto che raffigurasse un mazzo di
asparagi, offrendogli come ricompensa una somma veramente irrisoria.
Manet allora gli rispose:
- A questo costo posso darle solo un'asparago.-
-D'accordo- accettò il cliente.
Fu così che Manet mantenne la parola e nel 1928 ad un'esposizione che si fece in Francia della pittura di Manet, comparve un quadro
raffigurante un solo asparago.
(Il quadro protagonista di questo aneddoto è l'Asparago, ora al Museo d'Orsay di Parigi)
